Het Vachtje is a pet shop and dog boutique on the Haarlemmerdijk in Amsterdam, within walking distance of the Houthavens and the Pontsteiger, offering a selected range of food and accessories, as well as personal dietary advice.
The Houthavens and the area around the Pontsteiger have grown significantly in recent years. More and more people live there with a dog or cat, often in a new-build apartment where the pet's accessories are chosen as carefully as the rest of the interior. What is sometimes missing in the area is a shop that offers genuine advice: a place where someone behind the counter knows what they sell and can honestly tell you what is right for your dog or cat. That place is closer than you think.
How to get to Het Vachtje from the Houthavens
From the Pontsteiger and the Houthavens, it is about a fifteen-minute walk to the Haarlemmerdijk. Cross the Spaarndammerbuurt via the Zoutkeetsgracht and the Westelijke Eilanden, and you will naturally come out onto the Haarlemmerstraat and the Haarlemmerdijk. By bike, you will be there in five to ten minutes. You can find our shop at Haarlemmerdijk 97-105, in the middle of one of Amsterdam's most charming shopping streets. Coming with the dog? They are more than welcome in the shop; many customers combine a walk along the IJ with a visit to the store.
Food and dietary advice you can trust
We offer a selected range of dog and cat food, chosen for its composition rather than profit margins. For a dog with a sensitive digestive system or skin problems, we will look at age, weight, and current diet together with you before making a recommendation. In addition to well-known brands, we carry our own brand, ARNI, which we have formulated ourselves, and snacks from brands such as Landman, which many regular customers continue to choose. If you are unsure which food is right for your pet, we will help you choose rather than simply selling you the most expensive option on the shelf.
Do you live outside the city or not have time to visit? Then you can easily order through our webshop. We offer free shipping within the Netherlands on orders over 59 euros, so your regular food or box of snacks will be delivered straight to your home.
A dog boutique with brands you won't find everywhere
In our dog boutique, you will find harnesses, collars, leashes, and cushions from brands we have personally selected for their fit and durability. Many of these brands are rarely found elsewhere in the Netherlands. For a dog from the Houthavens that walks along the water every day, a well-fitting harness is just as important as the right food. If you visit our shop, we will fit every harness together with your dog to ensure the size is correct before you make a purchase.
Why local customers choose Het Vachtje
Het Vachtje is not a discount store or an anonymous chain. We know many of the dogs in the neighbourhood by name and know which customer has a new kitten or has just lost an old, loyal four-legged friend. This personal attention is why customers keep coming back. Anyone who comes in with a question about food, a harness, or coat care will receive attentive, knowledgeable assistance, no matter how big or small the question is.
