Indication

The combined characteristics of Pro-Vet HyperSen diet food make this ration useful in the treatment of various cat ailments. Food hypersensitivity and atopy often coexist in cats and it is therefore difficult to make a definitive distinction between the two conditions. Pro-Vet HyperSen provides optimal treatment to patients with food hypersensitivity and those with atopy.
Splitting proteins into smaller peptide fragments apparently leads to fewer unwanted immunological reactions. This principle also applies to cats with food hypersensitivity. Cats with food hypersensitivity to soy protein developed pruritus after ingestion of intact soy protein, but did not do so with hydrolyzed soy protein.
Pro-Vet HyperSen cat food is a therapeutic hypoallergenic diet containing hydrolyzed proteins and should be used as an elimination diet. To date, elimination diets with hydrolyzed and parent proteins have not been directly compared, but based on data for elimination diets with intact and hydrolyzed proteins, it would indicate that a hypoallergenic diet such as Pro-Vet HyperSen with hydrolyzed proteins is more efficient than that with intact proteins for the management of food hypersensitivity.

Atopy and food hypersensitivity often coexist and have similar clinical features, but the skin condition caused by inhaled allergens will not respond to hypoallergenic protein sources. The treatment of atopic skin diseases consists of suppression of the chronic inflammatory reactions. The eicosanoids in Pro-Vet HyperSen are formed from dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) so that Pro-Vet HyperSen has anti-inflammatory properties.
Double-blind, placebo-controlled experiments in cats with allergic dermatosis have shown that supplementation of both borage oil not rich in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) and fish oil rich in EPA reduces the severity and extent of pruritus, erythema and self-mutilation are relevantly reduced. Good results have recently been obtained with a diet rich in both fish oil and borage oil. Pro-Vet HyperSen contains approximately 0.5% borage oil and 5% fish oil. The efficacy of Pro-Vet HyperSen was tested in four clinics in a double-blind, placebo-controlled design. After 10 weeks on the diet, the score of pruritus and erythema had decreased by approximately half, while the control treatment had no effect. According to the owners, the diet had improved the condition of 60% of the cats. It is clear that a large proportion of patients with atopic dermatitis will improve after the provision of Pro-Vet HyperSen enriched with optimal amounts of borage and fish oils. However, there will be wide differences in individual receptivity.
In cats with idiopathic chronic colitis or inflammatory bowel disease, significant clinical improvement occurs after taking Pro-Vet HyperSen - based on hydrolyzed protein, without the use of medications. The ingestion of fish oil can be expected to further improve the clinical condition due to its anti-inflammatory activity. A 56% reduction in severity of clinical symptoms in ulcerative colitis has been observed in human patients.
